The Confusion
Procurement teams often use "threaded rod" and "stud bolt" interchangeably. In a hardware store selling general-purpose products, this may be fine. In structural, pressure equipment, and industrial applications, they are distinct products with different specifications, grades, and applications.
Threaded Rod — Continuous Thread, General Purpose
A threaded rod is a long rod with continuous threading from end to end (also called all-thread rod, ATR, or fully threaded stud). Standard lengths are typically 1m or 2m, cut to site requirements.
Standards: DIN 976-1 (metric thread), ASTM A307 Grade B, IS 6639 Class B
Common grades:
- Grade 4.8 (mild steel) — general construction, MEP hangers, concrete formwork
- Grade 8.8 — medium structural loading, equipment mounting
- Grade 10.9 — structural and high-load applications
- A2-70 (SS304) — food, pharmaceutical, light corrosion resistance
- A4-80 (SS316) — marine, chemical, pharmaceutical contact
Typical applications:
- Suspended ceiling M-bar hangers (typically M8, M10)
- MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) pipe supports
- Concrete formwork ties (B-type anchors)
- Anchor rods in chemical anchor systems (site-cut)
- Tensioning rods in pre-stressed concrete
- Curtain wall and cladding support
- Foundation anchor applications where length is cut on-site
Key characteristic: Thread runs continuously end to end. Length is cut as required. Often supplied in 1m or 3m lengths for site cutting.
Stud Bolt — Precision Engineered Flanging Product
A stud bolt is a precision-length fastener with threads at both ends and an unthreaded shank in the middle. Unlike threaded rod, stud bolts are manufactured to an exact length and thread configuration — not cut from bar stock.
Standards: ASTM A193 (B7, B7M, B8, B8M), DIN 939 (stud bolt, nut end), DIN 938 (screwed-in stud bolt)
Common grades:
- ASTM A193 B7 (Cr-Mo alloy steel, 125 ksi tensile) — pressure vessels, refineries, power plants
- ASTM A193 B8M (SS316L) — corrosive service
- ASTM A193 B16 (Cr-Mo-V) — very high temperature service above 538°C
- ASTM A320 L7 (low temperature impact tested) — cryogenic service
Thread configuration for pressure equipment: Standard stud bolts for ASME flanges have UNC threads on both ends. Thread engagement length = 1× diameter on the short end (screwed into the flange) and 1.5× diameter on the long end (nut end). The centre shank is unthreaded and typically the same as or slightly smaller than the minor thread diameter.
Typical applications:
- ASME flanged piping connections (the primary application globally)
- Pressure vessel manway covers and nozzle flanges
- Valve body connections
- Heat exchanger shell-to-channel flanges
- Pump and compressor casing flanges
- Turbine and boiler connections
Key characteristic: Manufactured to exact ASME B16.5/B16.47 flange stud bolt dimensions. Cannot be field-cut. Grade, length, and thread form are all precision-controlled.

Can I Substitute Threaded Rod for Stud Bolt?
In construction MEP and support applications: Yes, threaded rod grade 8.8 or 10.9 can substitute for stud bolt if the application is not a pressure system.
In pressure equipment (ASME flanges): Absolutely not. Using cut threaded rod instead of proper ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts in a pressure flange is: (a) structurally inadequate — incorrect thread engagement, (b) non-compliant with ASME B31.3/PED regulations, and (c) a safety hazard. This substitution has caused fatalities in process industry accidents.
