Coating Thickness and Lifespan

The lifespan of a zinc coating is directly proportional to its thickness. Zinc electroplating deposits a very thin layer (around 5 microns), suitable for indoor applications. Hot Dip Galvanizing builds a metallurgical bond with the steel, creating a thick layer (50+ microns) that can withstand decades of outdoor exposure.

Thread Tolerance and Assembly

Because HDG adds significant thickness, standard nuts will not fit onto HDG bolts. HDG nuts must be overtapped after galvanizing to accommodate the thicker bolt threads. Never mix HDG bolts with standard zinc-plated nuts, as it will compromise the joint strength and fit.
